Since 1959, the Antarctic Treaty has enabled peaceful cooperation despite political tensions. Today, Antarctica is more important than ever: its ecosystems, living resources and ice are vital to the global climate system.
The Treaty was born during the Cold War, building on the remarkable scientific cooperation of the International Geophysical Year 1957–58 - also called the third International Polar Year.
As geopolitics and climate change reshape the polar regions, how can the Antarctic Treaty System remain strong? And how can Norway, as a major Polar nation and rights holder, be a constructive force?
The International Polar Year 2032–33 offers a unique opportunity to connect science, diplomacy and the future governance of both Antarctica and the Arctic.
