We Know What Harms Nature – So Why Are We Still Funding It?

Om arrangementet
We already know what is destroying nature – yet global investments continue to flow in the wrong direction. We are not lacking knowledge. We are lacking political choices.
While biodiversity loss accelerates, public and private finance still support activities that degrade ecosystems. At the same time, new tools, from carbon markets to biodiversity credits, promise to redirect capital towards nature. But are they working? And who decides what counts as “good” investment?
This event moves beyond principles to confront the uncomfortable reality: fixing nature is not just a technical challenge; it is a political and financial choice.
Drawing on concrete experiences, including blue carbon projects in Kenya supported by Norad, we ask what it actually takes to finance nature at scale - and whether current approaches risk turning ecosystems into just another asset class.
At a time when Norway is redefining its development policy, this raises a fundamental question:
Will Norway continue to fund systems that drive environmental decline, or take a leading role in reshaping how nature is valued, financed, and governed?
This is a conversation about power, priorities, and responsibility - bringing together finance, policy, and practice to explore what real change would require.
